How to Use Google Maps: Never Get Lost Again
equipe-vida-prata
There was a time when getting around meant unfolding a paper map on the hood of the car, squinting at tiny street names, and hoping you made the right turn. Those days are over. Google Maps, the free navigation app available on virtually every smartphone, has made it possible for anyone to find their way anywhere, whether you are driving across town, walking to a new restaurant, or figuring out which bus to take.
If you have a smartphone but have never really used Google Maps, or if you have opened it once and felt overwhelmed, this guide is for you. We will walk through everything step by step, from the very basics to some useful features that can make your daily life easier.
What Is Google Maps?
Google Maps is a free application made by Google that shows you maps of the entire world. It can give you turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, biking, or using public transportation. It can show you where businesses are located, what time they open and close, and even how busy they are at any given moment. It works on both iPhones and Android phones, and you can also use it on a computer.
Think of it as having a personal navigator in your pocket, one that knows every road, every street, and every address, and is always up to date.
Getting Started
If you do not already have Google Maps on your phone, you can download it for free from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android). On many Android phones, it comes preinstalled.
Once you open the app, you will see a map centered on your current location, represented by a blue dot. The map moves as you move. You can zoom in by spreading two fingers apart on the screen, and zoom out by pinching your fingers together.
At the top of the screen, there is a search bar. This is where the magic happens.
How to Search for a Place
Tap the search bar at the top of the screen and type what you are looking for. You can type:
- A full address: “123 Main Street, Springfield, IL”
- A business name: “Walmart near me”
- A general category: “pharmacies nearby” or “Italian restaurants”
- A landmark: “Statue of Liberty”
Google Maps will show you results on the map, with red pins marking each location. Tap on a pin to see more information about that place, including its address, phone number, hours of operation, reviews from other people, and photos.
How to Get Directions
This is the feature you will probably use the most. Here is how to get step-by-step directions to any destination:
- Search for the place you want to go, or tap on it on the map.
- Tap the blue “Directions” button.
- Google Maps will automatically set your current location as the starting point. If you want to start from a different location, tap the “Your location” field at the top and type in a new starting address.
- Choose your mode of transportation by tapping the icons at the top: car, public transit, walking, or bicycle.
- The app will show you one or more routes. Each route shows the estimated travel time and distance. The recommended route is highlighted in blue.
- Tap “Start” to begin turn-by-turn navigation.
Once navigation begins, the app will give you spoken directions, telling you when to turn, which lane to be in, and how far it is to the next instruction. You do not need to look at the screen while driving. Just listen to the voice.
Important safety note: Never hold or look at your phone while driving. If you are using Google Maps for driving directions, set up the destination before you start moving, and mount the phone in a holder on the dashboard or windshield so the map is visible without picking up the phone.
Useful Features You Should Know About
Save Your Home and Work Addresses
You can save your home address and any other frequently visited address so you never have to type it again. Go to the search bar, tap on “Saved” at the bottom of the screen, then set your home address. After that, you can simply tap “Home” whenever you want directions back.
Share Your Location
If you want a family member to know where you are, Google Maps lets you share your location in real time. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner, then tap “Location sharing.” You can share your location with specific people for a set period of time or indefinitely. This is a wonderful safety feature, especially when traveling.
Download Maps for Offline Use
If you are traveling somewhere with unreliable cell service, you can download a section of the map to your phone ahead of time. Search for the area you need, tap the area name at the bottom, then tap the three dots menu and select “Download offline map.” The map will be saved to your phone and work even without internet.
Check Traffic Before You Leave
Google Maps shows real-time traffic information. Green means traffic is flowing normally, yellow indicates moderate slowdowns, and red means heavy traffic. Before heading out, open the app and check the route to see if there are any delays. The app will also suggest faster alternative routes if available.
Find Nearby Services Quickly
On the main screen, you will see category buttons below the search bar, such as “Restaurants,” “Gas stations,” “Pharmacies,” and “Groceries.” Tapping one of these instantly shows you nearby options. This is incredibly handy when you are in an unfamiliar area and need to find something quickly.
Street View
Google Maps includes a feature called Street View that shows you actual photographs of streets and buildings. If you want to see what a place looks like before you go, search for it, and then look for the small photo thumbnail near the bottom of the screen. Tap it to enter Street View, where you can look around as if you were standing right there. This is particularly useful for checking what the entrance to a building looks like so you can recognize it when you arrive.
Explore Public Transit
If you use buses or trains, Google Maps can show you exactly which route to take, where to board, and when the next bus or train arrives. After entering your destination, tap the public transit icon (it looks like a train), and the app will list all available transit options with departure times and transfer points.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
The blue dot is not showing my correct location. Make sure your phone’s location services are turned on. On an iPhone, go to Settings, then Privacy, then Location Services, and make sure Google Maps is set to “While Using.” On Android, go to Settings, then Location, and make sure it is turned on.
The voice directions are not working. Check that your phone’s volume is turned up. Also, tap the speaker icon in the top right corner of the navigation screen to make sure sound is enabled.
The map looks blurry or is not loading. This usually means you have a weak internet connection. Try moving to an area with better signal, or use the offline maps feature described above.
Practice Makes Perfect
The best way to get comfortable with Google Maps is to practice. Try searching for places you already know, like your local grocery store or a friend’s house. Get directions to somewhere familiar and watch how the app guides you. The more you use it, the more natural it will feel.
Google Maps is one of the most useful tools on your phone. It can save you time, reduce the stress of navigating unfamiliar places, and give you the confidence to explore new areas without fear of getting lost. Once you start using it regularly, you will wonder how you ever got by without it.
